Garment Care and Sustainable Consumption

This unit centers on extending garment lifecycles through proper fabric care, basic repair skills, and mindful buying/selling practices. Students learn laundering and storage, stain removal, hand-stitching repairs, shoe and sneaker care, intentional thrifting and resale, and how to apply outfit formulas and capsule-wardrobe strategies to support sustainable fashion choices.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the properties of common fibers and fabrics and determine appropriate laundering, drying, storage, and care procedures to extend garment longevity.
• Demonstrate basic maintenance techniques—including hand-stitching repairs, stain removal, sneaker cleaning, and leather care—meeting established performance criteria.
• Apply sustainable buying and selling practices by evaluating secondhand and ethical brands, preparing for thrift-store shopping, and pricing items for resale to minimize waste and maximize value.
• Evaluate personal wardrobes using outfit formulas and capsule-wardrobe principles to create a 7–14 day outfit plan that reduces fast-fashion reliance and mitigates eco-anxiety.
