Spatial Data Modeling and Analysis

This unit develops students’ ability to organize, validate, analyze, and visualize spatial data using ArcGIS. Students will work with vector and raster data types, geodatabases, topology, projections, GPS/TIGER inputs, spatial analyst tools, and map design elements to prepare data for real-world site selection and reporting.

Learning Objectives

• Demonstrate geodatabase and data management skills by converting shapefiles to geodatabase feature classes, organizing layers, and validating topology to maintain data integrity
• Apply raster and vector spatial analysis methods (e.g., Euclidean distance, raster calculator, density, dissolve, zone-to-region conversion) to identify candidate sites and compute cost and area metrics
• Analyze coordinate systems, projection, scale, and resolution to ensure spatial accuracy when georeferencing features and integrating GPS and TIGER/Line datasets
• Evaluate map communication and workflow efficiency by creating appropriate symbology, classifications, charts, and reports, and by executing Python scripts to automate repetitive GIS tasks
