Robot Construction and Programming Fundamentals

This unit combines introductory programming concepts with hands-on assembly to produce a basic, functioning robot. Students will learn to write and run simple programs, assemble and integrate core mechanical and electronic components, and begin using sensors and debugging techniques to prepare for more advanced automation tasks.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the function and interdependence of robot components (motors, wheels, controllers, whiskers, and light sensors) to plan a safe and organized assembly process
• Apply programming concepts and development tools to write, modify, and run code snippets and subroutines (using the Basic Stamp Editor) that control robot behaviors
• Demonstrate correct assembly and integration of mechanical and electrical subsystems—including attaching motors, wheels, controllers, and sensor hardware—and perform power-up and basic operational checks
• Evaluate and troubleshoot both hardware and software issues by using built-in programs, diagnostic steps, and systematic debugging strategies to restore expected robot function
