Advanced Drone Safety and Operations

This capstone unit reinforces safe, legal, and effective small UAS operations through troubleshooting, pre-/post-flight procedures, airspace and weather considerations, and Part 107 exam preparation. It builds on foundational flight skills from earlier units and prepares students for certification, professional practice, and entry-level UAS responsibilities.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze common operational failures and misconceptions (battery life, GPS/connectivity, geofencing, obstacle avoidance, RTH, VLOS loss, and flight balance) by diagnosing simulated incidents and recommending corrective actions in at least 8 of 10 scenarios.
• Apply standardized pre-flight, takeoff, in-flight, and post-flight checklists — including safety, night, and adverse-weather considerations — by completing hands-on or simulated procedures to instructor standards.
• Demonstrate knowledge of airspace classifications, special-use airspace, and Part 107 requirements by correctly identifying applicable rules and restrictions in practice assessments and scoring at least 85% on test-detail items.
• Evaluate professional and legal responsibilities (registration, effects of alcohol/drugs, testing logistics, job readiness, and basic tax considerations) and produce a compliance and career-readiness plan suitable for entry-level UAS operations.
