Operationalizing DevOps Practices

This capstone unit consolidates technical and cultural foundations into practical operational skills for sustainable DevOps. Students will learn to select architectures and tools, design deployment and monitoring strategies, automate toil, and implement human-centered processes to measure, iterate, and accelerate delivery while avoiding common anti-patterns.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze trade-offs and failure modes across architectures, deployment styles, and tooling choices to recommend appropriate strategies that balance speed, reliability, security, and maintainability
• Apply continuous integration, continuous testing, deployment automation, and cloud-hosted services to accelerate delivery and reduce manual toil in simulated or real environments
• Demonstrate implementation of organizational practices—such as democratized deployments, blameless postmortems, measurement strategies, and guardrails—that mitigate anti-patterns, support psychological safety, and foster continuous improvement
• Evaluate system and team performance using metrics, observability data, and incident reviews to iterate on tools, processes, and personnel decisions and to manage change safely
