Functional Data I/O and Debugging

This unit teaches students to apply functional programming techniques in both Haskell and Python to ingest, transform, and analyze datasets while working with text and binary file formats. Students will use command-line and Jupyter notebook workflows, learn to diagnose and fix language-specific errors, and prepare development environments and libraries for data-driven tasks.

Learning Objectives

• Apply functional programming constructs in Haskell and Python — including composing and parameterizing types, mapping, pattern matching, recursion, and reduction — to transform and process list-based datasets.
• Demonstrate the ability to access and manipulate I/O via command-line interfaces and Jupyter notebooks, including reading, writing, and ensuring access to text and binary files and loading datasets.
• Analyze and debug Haskell and Python compile-time and runtime errors, perform installation and environment tests, and employ quick-fix strategies and libraries (e.g., Hascore, PyAudio, vect) to restore functionality.
• Evaluate dataset sources and binary data formats for analysis tasks and apply appropriate functional preprocessing techniques to prepare data for downstream development.
