Object-Oriented Java Fundamentals

This unit expands students’ mastery of Java by covering core object-oriented concepts (classes, inheritance, access control, abstract and inner classes) and essential language features (primitives, control flow, parameter passing, and exception handling). Students will also practice development setup, documentation, basic functional programming constructs, and data retrieval/management to prepare for building more complex Java applications.

Learning Objectives

• Apply object-oriented programming concepts by implementing Java classes that use inheritance, abstract classes, inner classes, and appropriate access modifiers (public, private, default), and by demonstrating method overriding and overloading
• Demonstrate Java language fundamentals by writing programs that use primitive types, perform numeric formatting, pass parameters, and control program flow using nested if statements
• Analyze and implement error-handling and data-management techniques by using try/catch constructs, explaining garbage collection and data destruction concepts, and retrieving data from simple sources
• Demonstrate development-tool fluency and learning pathway skills by installing and configuring the JDK, using comments and documentation effectively, applying basic functional programming constructs where appropriate, and evaluating next steps for continued learning
