This unit introduces core concepts, tools, and workflows used to build modern web pages and beginner web apps. Students will learn how to set up development environments and hosting, author accessible responsive pages with HTML/CSS, write and debug fundamental JavaScript, and understand basic server-side and data concepts that prepare them for more advanced application development.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze components of local development environments and hosting providers to select appropriate setups and explain their roles in the web development workflow
- Apply HTML and CSS fundamentals (tags, attributes, box model, selectors, rules, responsive layout, and Flexbox) to create accessible, responsive static pages
- Demonstrate core JavaScript constructs and behaviors—including variables, expressions, control flow, functions, objects, arrays, events, and asynchronous operations—and use browser and PHP debugging tools to identify and fix errors
- Evaluate basic server-side and data concepts (the roles of PHP and MySQL, form handling, client- and server-side validation, and web storage) and identify essential security and accessibility considerations for web apps
