This unit surveys major buildings, movements, and events from antiquity through the modern skyscraper to connect stylistic evolution with structural and technological innovation. Students analyze representative case studies and controversies to inform design decisions and prepare for advanced drafting and architectural problem solving.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze representative works from ancient, medieval, renaissance, and modern architecture to identify defining stylistic, cultural, and technological characteristics using specific examples from the unit
• Apply principles of structural systems, materials, and construction innovations to diagram and compare load-bearing, vaulting, dome, curtain-wall, and tube-frame systems used in buildings studied
• Evaluate the impact of historical events, engineering failures, controversies, and professional/ethical issues on building design, codes, and practice
• Demonstrate clear oral and visual communication by preparing and presenting a concise case study that synthesizes historical context, design intent, structural systems, and cultural significance for a selected building
