Building Systems and Project Preparation

This unit covers the core building systems, site works, and interior finishes needed to take a self‑build or renovation from design to construction readiness. Students learn energy‑performance strategies (insulation, airtightness, thermal mass), structural and roof solutions, services and finishes planning, plus procurement, cost estimating, and regulatory/insurance considerations to prepare a coordinated project plan for on‑site execution.

Learning Objectives

• analyze site conditions, planning constraints, and special building considerations (e.g., listed status, established use) to finalize a compliant scope of work and required approvals
• apply principles of thermal performance, acoustic control, moisture management, and structural detailing to specify appropriate insulation, airtightness, roofing, foundations and timber framing solutions for a given project
• demonstrate selection and sequencing of building systems, finishes and services (kitchen, bathroom, flooring, lighting, alternative power, electrical connections) by producing a coordinated installation plan and detailed materials list with cost estimates
• evaluate procurement, contracting and risk management options by preparing a procurement strategy, contractor/subcontractor roles, budget estimate, insurance/warranty checklist and site preparation/safety plan
