Construction Systems and Project Management

This unit develops practical construction knowledge and project-management skills for self‑build and renovation projects, covering foundations, walls, roofs, stairs, insulation, ventilation, services and external finishes. Students learn to interpret building regulations, obtain estimates and contracts, manage costs and schedules, and evaluate energy‑efficient and eco‑friendly systems to prepare for on‑site execution and finalisation.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze local planning constraints and building regulations to determine required approvals and compliant design modifications for a self‑build or renovation project.
• Apply appropriate construction methods and safe use of tools/plant to prepare and construct foundations, external and internal walls, roofs, stairs, retaining works and drives.
• Evaluate options for heating, ventilation, fuel sources, acoustic and thermal insulation, and eco‑friendly finishes to determine impacts on energy performance, cost and sustainability.
• Demonstrate procurement and project‑management practices by obtaining and comparing estimates, arranging contracts, finalizing prices, budgeting, scheduling phases and implementing consumer protections.
