This unit examines how human activities, technology, policy, and economics interact with marine life and ecosystems, from coastal habitats to the deep sea. Students investigate species and habitats, monitoring tools, laws and enforcement, and resource-use trade-offs to prepare for designing conservation and management solutions in the final unit.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze the ecological and economic impacts of human activities (shipping, fishing, deep-sea mining, and energy extraction) on marine ecosystems using case-study evidence
- Evaluate ocean-monitoring technologies, legal frameworks, and enforcement strategies to recommend improvements for protecting species and habitats
- Demonstrate identification of key marine taxa and habitats (cetaceans, pinnipeds, seabirds, cephalopods, echinoderms, seagrass, salt marshes, and coral reefs) and explain their ecological roles and vulnerabilities
