Foundations of Beef Cattle Management

This unit introduces students to the rewards, responsibilities, and fundamentals of raising beef cattle, including bovine terminology and anatomy, breed selection, facility planning, and basic nutrition. It builds on prior introductory animal science knowledge and prepares students for more advanced health, reproduction, and production management units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the rewards, responsibilities, costs, and safety/biosecurity considerations of owning and managing beef cattle and justify decisions using basic economic and ethical reasoning
• Demonstrate knowledge of bovine terminology and anatomy by correctly identifying and explaining the function of key external and internal structures
• Evaluate common beef cattle breeds and their production traits by comparing breeds and recommending appropriate choices for specified production goals and North Carolina environments
• Apply facility planning and nutrition principles by creating a basic facility layout that addresses animal flow and safety and developing a simple feeding program that meets stage-specific nutrient needs
