Applied Occupational Health Tools

This unit integrates practical assessment tools, legislative guidance, and international resources to manage common workplace health hazards such as manual handling, noise, vibration, fire, asbestos, and work at height. Students learn to use calculators and toolkits, recognize common assessment pitfalls, engage staff, and design measurable improvement and monitoring plans for sustained safety performance.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze workplace hazards and prioritize controls by selecting and conducting appropriate assessments using MAC, ART, noise exposure, and hand–arm vibration calculators as well as asbestos task sheets
• Apply relevant legislation and national/international guidance (e.g., IOSH, ILO, WHO, European Agency resources) to produce compliant risk assessments and control strategies for fire, manual handling, height, noise, vibration, and asbestos
• Demonstrate strategies to improve health and safety performance by designing an implementation plan that incorporates workforce engagement, training, stress management tools, and measures to avoid common failures (e.g., paperwork-only assessments, assuming no change)
• Evaluate external resources and consultants by using the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register and other sources to identify limitations of guidance and establish monitoring, review, and continuous improvement mechanisms
