Bollywood Music, Dance, and Stardom

This unit examines Bollywood’s musical and choreographic traditions, star system, awards culture, and cross‑industry influences. Students deepen their ability to analyze how music, dance, costume, and celebrity shape narrative, production, and audience reception, preparing them to apply these insights in later production and critical projects.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze how music and dance traditions (including folk, Punjabi, Kollywood, and Western influences) function as narrative and emotional devices in Bollywood films by citing at least three films and describing two musical or choreographic elements from each.
• Evaluate the impact of celebrity culture, awards (e.g., Filmfare), fandom, and media (talk shows, TV franchises) on Bollywood production, marketing, and audience reception by producing a 600–800 word report or a 5–7 minute presentation using at least three case studies.
• Compare and contrast cross‑industry and cross‑national influences (Kollywood, Lollywood, Hollywood) on film form, music, and choreography, identifying at least three specific techniques or trends adopted into mainstream Bollywood.
• Demonstrate application of production and design elements (costume, choreography, song placement, and music styles) by creating a storyboard or multimedia pitch that integrates at least two elements and explains their cultural significance and intended audience impact in a 4–6 slide presentation or 3–5 minute video.
