This unit examines the people, processes, and historical context that shape musical theatre from pre-opening through awards season. Students study career pathways, key production roles (producers, stage managers, music, sound, and hair teams), and professional arrival and pre-show procedures, preparing them to participate in and evaluate live theatrical events.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze how shifts in musical theatre (1960s–1970s) and career pathways influence the development of performers and creative teams in contemporary musical theatre
- Evaluate the roles, responsibilities, and collaborative workflows of key production personnel (producers, stage managers, music team, sound designers, hair supervisors) in bringing a show from early production to opening night
- Apply professional theatre protocols by creating and following a pre-show checklist and participating in a simulated one-night event or dress/tech rehearsal to demonstrate readiness
- Demonstrate the ability to assess a production’s artistic and technical quality and justify basic producer decisions (including budgeting priorities and awards strategy) in a written or oral critique
