Professional Screenplay Development

This capstone unit advances students from crafting drafts to readying work for production and the marketplace. It integrates screenplay structure and formatting with career skills—pitching, festivals, selling, networking, ethics, and sustained revision—using contemporary writer case studies to model professional practice.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze case studies of contemporary screenwriters (e.g., Spike Lee, Jordan Peele, Issa Rae, Taika Waititi, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, John Logan) to identify at least five career strategies and ethical considerations, and justify how they inform a personal career plan.
• Apply screenplay structure and formatting standards (including Aristotelian principles, subplot integration, and varied middle constructions) to produce a properly formatted 10–15 page short film screenplay first draft and a one-page synopsis.
• Demonstrate pitching and market-preparation skills by preparing and delivering a two-minute pitch, creating a festival submission plan targeting at least three appropriate festivals, and outlining steps for submitting or selling a screenplay.
• Evaluate and implement revision and adaptation strategies by producing a revision plan that responds to peer/mentor feedback, outlining an approach to adapt material from an outside source, and creating a sustainable writing routine to balance obligations and ongoing career development.
