Foundations of Ancient Civilizations

This unit surveys major developments of ancient societies—political systems, religious beliefs, technological and military innovations, and cultural narratives—from early river cities through classical Greece and Rome. Students will analyze primary and secondary sources and begin applying historical inquiry and basic pedagogy to prepare for subsequent field experience work in the Teaching as a Profession pathway.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze political, economic, and social features of ancient civilizations (e.g., river cities, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome) by composing a comparative essay that cites specific evidence from at least three case studies
• Demonstrate the ability to interpret primary sources and artifacts (e.g., excerpts from Homer, the Rosetta Stone, archaeological evidence of walls and infrastructure) by producing source analyses that identify authorship, purpose, and historical significance
• Evaluate how military and engineering innovations (e.g., fortifications, cavalry tactics, road and city-building) influenced state formation and empire expansion by creating a cause-and-effect matrix and presenting findings
• Apply historical inquiry and introductory pedagogical planning by designing a brief, age-appropriate classroom activity or formative assessment that teaches one ancient concept (e.g., early democracy, animism, or philosophical roots) and justifies instructional choices
