Claims, Certification, and Compliance

This unit expands foundational coding skills into real-world payer, credentialing, and compliance contexts. Students learn payer-specific claims processing (commercial, Medicare, and government), appeals and integrity best practices, and evaluate certification and career pathways to prepare for credentialing and advanced units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze differences among commercial payers, Medicare, ACO arrangements, and other government payers to determine payer-specific documentation, coding (ICD), modifier use, and reimbursement factors for accurate claim submission
• Apply ICD coding, correct modifier placement, preauthorization/referral requirements, and medical necessity criteria to create compliant claim scenarios and resolve common coding challenges
• Demonstrate the ability to evaluate certification options, time commitments, prerequisites, continuing education requirements, and alternative work arrangements (freelancing, temping, dual-role employment) to develop a personalized certification and career preparation plan
• Evaluate compliance and appeals processes by identifying causes of denials (including unbundling and upcoding), executing appropriate appeal steps, and implementing integrity safeguards to protect provider and payer interests and recover eligible revenue
