Restoration Networking Governance and Models

This unit examines governance, legal, and business-model approaches for rebuilding healthier online platforms, focusing on trust mechanisms, regulatory reforms, and sustainable incentives. Building on technical foundations from earlier units, students will translate threat analysis into policies, certification schemes, and revenue designs that protect users (especially children), support competition, and prepare for implementation and evaluation in the next unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze how platform design, misinformation dynamics (e.g., Streisand Effect, misleading warnings), and AI-driven features produce user harms and privacy risks, and identify corresponding technical and policy mitigations.
• Evaluate proposed legal and regulatory reforms—including Section 230 reform, antitrust interventions, and First Amendment considerations—against criteria of effectiveness, enforceability, and protection of fair competition and free expression.
• Design a comprehensive restoration networking governance framework that integrates a written constitution, an independent institute, third-party certification, user advisory boards, and enforcement mechanisms to enhance safety and trust.
• Develop a sustainable platform accountability and revenue model (e.g., freemium tiers, ethical advertising, revenue sharing, dividends, featured content rules) that balances user safety, creator incentives, privacy, and regulatory compliance and justify it with evidence-based reasoning.
