Responsible Nature and Cultural Tourism

This unit teaches students how to make ethical, sustainable decisions while engaging with nature and local cultures. Learners will assess souvenirs and animal experiences, practice respectful interaction and photography with First Nations and local communities, and choose low-impact nature-based activities.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze consumer souvenirs and merchandise to identify sustainable, legal, and culturally appropriate options using criteria for materials, origin, and cultural significance
• Evaluate wildlife- and nature-based tours and animal attractions using an evidence-based checklist of welfare, conservation, and ethical indicators to select reputable experiences
• Demonstrate culturally respectful behaviors and responsible photography practices when interacting with First Nations peoples and local communities by applying consent-based communication strategies
• Apply environmental stewardship principles to plan and justify a low-impact nature-based activity (e.g., birding, diving, hiking, dark-sky viewing, or sailing) that complies with local laws and conservation guidelines
