Crime Types, Theories, and Responses

This unit examines major categories of crime, key criminological theories, and system responses that shape investigation, prosecution, and correction. Students will connect types of offenses (e.g., homicide, property, white‑collar, organized crime, drug and terrorism cases) with theoretical explanations, victimization patterns, and institutional roles to prepare for applied casework and advanced investigations in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze major categories of crime (homicide, property, white‑collar, organized, drug‑related, and terrorism) by identifying defining elements, typical motives, investigative challenges, and prosecutorial considerations.
• Evaluate criminological theories (including strain, genetic, feminist, cultural, and rational choice perspectives) and apply them to case studies to explain causes of criminal behavior and patterns of victimization.
• Demonstrate understanding of justice system roles and processes by describing the functions of defense attorneys, state courts, juvenile courts, custodial placement decisions, and corrections personnel in responding to different offenses.
• Apply principles of coordinated investigation and crime‑fighting tools by proposing interagency strategies and responses for complex offenses (e.g., white‑collar schemes, organized crime, terrorism) while assessing social costs and policy implications.
