Advanced Crime Scene Analysis

This unit advances students’ applied forensic skills in trace evidence, medicolegal investigation, toxicology, and forensic pathology. Learners integrate laboratory procedures, evidence preservation, and legal responsibilities to reconstruct events and prepare findings for judicial processes.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze trace evidence (hair, fibers, rifling, toolmarks, bite marks, and gunshot residues) using comparative and microscopic techniques and document linkages in a written forensic report.
• Apply proper evidence-collection, preservation, chain-of-custody, and laboratory-testing protocols for biological samples, toxicants, and explosive residues to maintain integrity for judicial review.
• Demonstrate interpretation of medicolegal data from autopsy reports, time-of-death estimation, electrocution/burns, inhalation injuries, and confirmatory DNA/fingerprint results to establish identity and cause.
• Evaluate investigative findings to reconstruct events (including facial reconstruction, serial offender patterns, and locating missing corpses) and prepare admissible expert testimony that addresses Locard’s Exchange Principle and ethical/legal considerations.
