Practical Legal Responsibilities and Risk Management

This capstone unit synthesizes personal and juvenile rights, victim options, and responsible legal decision-making while emphasizing prevention strategies and effective use of legal counsel. Students practice risk-management techniques for personal and business contexts — including contracts, insurance, debt control, estate planning — and develop skills to hire and work with attorneys ethically and effectively.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze legal rights and procedures for adults, victims, and juveniles, including parents’ responsibilities, and summarize potential courtroom outcomes and available protections in simulated scenarios.
• Apply risk-reduction strategies—such as committing important agreements to writing, purchasing appropriate insurance, managing debt and savings, and choosing a suitable business structure—to evaluate and improve at least two real-world personal or small-business case studies.
• Evaluate appropriate behavioral and ethical responses when interacting with law enforcement, tax authorities, and courts, and recommend corrective actions to minimize legal exposure.
• Demonstrate the ability to select and manage legal representation by creating interview questions, identifying conflicts of interest, assessing an attorney’s courtroom track record, and preparing a written agreement of representation in a role-played client interview.
