Applied Functional Programming and I/O

This unit applies core functional programming concepts across Python and Haskell to build, run, and compile real applications. Students will practice data manipulation, file and binary I/O, GUI/visualization integration, library use, and type/recursion debugging to prepare for project development and deployment in the final unit.

Learning Objectives

• Apply functional programming constructs (lambda expressions, higher-order functions, passing functions as arguments, pattern matching, and recursion) in both Python and Haskell to implement data transformations, filtering, and common list manipulations.
• Demonstrate file and I/O proficiency by reading and writing text and binary files, handling missing data, manipulating dataset entries, and organizing data using appropriate structures (lists, dictionaries/sets, vectors).
• Evaluate and use language-specific tools and libraries by compiling and running Haskell applications, creating and executing Python applications, and integrating GUI/visualization libraries (TkInter, PyQtGraph) and other third-party packages.
• Analyze program structure and type abstractions by identifying and correcting common recursion errors, implementing pattern matching and type classes in Haskell, and selecting suitable Python alternatives (dictionaries, sets) to produce robust, maintainable code.
