BIM Collaboration & Information Management

This unit explores BIM as an information-centered process, focusing on collaboration, standards, and the lifecycle management of model data. Students learn to apply open standards, manage federated models, and prepare business, legal, and technical plans to enable BIM adoption across building and infrastructure projects.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze BIM workflows, stakeholder roles, and collaboration methods to produce a collaboration matrix and information exchange plan for a project
• Apply parametric modeling practices, object-library acquisition, and open data standards (e.g., IFC) to create and manage model content suitable for federated coordination
• Develop a BIM implementation plan that includes a business case, legal/risk considerations, cost-savings estimates, and strategies to require and encourage BIM use on site
• Evaluate project-specific information requirements and select appropriate BIM analysis tools and information maintenance strategies, producing an information delivery schedule and model management plan
