Preproduction and Capture Basics

This unit introduces preproduction planning and basic capture techniques for YouTube videos, covering the video-making process, selecting tools and cameras, choosing a style, developing concepts, structuring content, scripting, shot planning, and introductory audio recording. Students will produce a concept, formatted script, and shot list and demonstrate basic microphone use to prepare for production and editing in subsequent units.

• Analyze the stages of the video-making process and select appropriate tools and camera types for a given YouTube video concept.
• Apply principles of style and video structure to develop a clear concept, outline, and target audience profile for a short YouTube video.
• Create a formatted script with dialogue and a detailed shot list specifying shot types, framing, and planned camera movement or fixed positions.
• Demonstrate proper audio capture techniques by selecting and using an appropriate microphone to record clear dialogue and synchronous sound.
