Advanced Image Processing and GIS Integration

This unit advances multispectral and multivariate image enhancement, classification, and geospatial integration techniques used in remote sensing workflows. Students will learn and apply image fusion and transformation methods, classification approaches, co-registration and DEM/InSAR integration, and GIS modelling concepts to produce and evaluate thematic maps for real-world applications.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and compare spectral enhancement and image-fusion techniques (IHS de-correlation stretch, Brovey transform, PCA and selective PCA) to select methods that maximize thematic discrimination in multispectral imagery
• Apply unsupervised and supervised classification workflows, including preprocessing, feature selection, iterative clustering, and accuracy assessment, to generate reliable classified thematic maps
• Demonstrate geospatial preprocessing and registration skills by performing GCP selection, polynomial deformation and warping, pixel-wise co-registration, and integration of DEM and InSAR products for surface analysis
• Evaluate GIS modelling and decision-support workflows by integrating projections/datums, map algebra, interpolation, uncertainty assessment, and thematic mapping best practices for domain applications (mineral exploration, water resources, earthquake damage zones)
