Advanced Java: Collections, Concurrency, GUI

This unit advances students’ Java programming skills by exploring collection manipulation, object-oriented features, exception handling, functional interfaces, concurrency controls, and JavaFX user interface development. Students will integrate data structures, lambda-driven event handling, and thread-safety techniques to build responsive, robust applications and prepare for further application development and capstone work.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and manipulate Java collections (LinkedList, stacks, queues, deques, maps, arrays) using iterators, enhanced for loops, and control structures to add, update, and remove elements safely
• Apply functional programming constructs and Java API features (lambda expressions, java.util.function interfaces, varargs, records, and date/BigDecimal utilities) to simplify code and handle events in applications
• Demonstrate design and implementation of responsive JavaFX user interfaces by launching applications, overriding the start method, arranging nodes with layout panes (VBox, TreeView, alignment), and wiring event handlers
• Evaluate and implement exception handling, synchronization, and locking strategies (synchronized methods, Lock objects, thread interruption, throwing/handling checked exceptions) to ensure correctness and thread-safety in concurrent programs
