AI Adoption and Governance for Nonprofits

This unit synthesizes strategy, governance, and emerging-technology considerations to enable nonprofits to responsibly adopt AI. Learners will create plans, governance policies, budgets, team and training approaches, and pilot designs that address ethics, regulatory frameworks, risk management, and long-term impact.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze external factors, trust considerations, ethical risks, and regulatory requirements (e.g., EU AI Act, NIST, Singapore models) to assess organizational AI risk and compliance for a nonprofit context
• Apply strategic planning methods to develop a comprehensive AI adoption plan and roadmap that includes goals, budgeting, multi-disciplinary team roles, training programs, governance structures, and measurable success metrics
• Evaluate AI governance frameworks, ethical guidelines, and policy tools to create organizational policies and processes that promote accountability, equity, and continuous improvement
• Demonstrate capacity-building and future-readiness by designing a pilot AI initiative (including Fundraising.AI or other use case) that integrates emerging technologies, monitoring and evaluation strategies, and a sustainability/funding plan
