Community Outreach and Byproduct Management

This unit builds on foundational animal and plant science skills to teach responsible byproduct and waste handling, value‑adding, and community engagement strategies for small-scale and hobby farms. Students will learn to convert animal and plant byproducts into saleable products, manage oils/chemicals/metals safely, and plan and deliver outreach and marketing activities (fairs, markets, tours, presentations) while using resources to address common rural myths and pursue further certification or agribusiness opportunities.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze local, state, and best-practice requirements for handling and disposing of animal byproducts, plant residues, oils, chemicals, and metals to create a compliant waste-management checklist for a hobby farm.
• Apply processing and preservation techniques to convert at least two types of animal or plant byproducts into marketable, safety-compliant products and prepare labeling/packaging for sale.
• Demonstrate planning and execution of community engagement events by preparing materials, safety plans, and a marketing strategy for two outreach activities (e.g., farmers market booth, county fair entry, farm tour, or petting farm).
• Evaluate common myths about rural life and develop an outreach resource kit (presentations, brochures, web sources, and organizational contacts) to educate the public and support continued professional development (e.g., Master Gardener training).
