Crime Causes, Responses, and Courts

This unit examines major criminological theories, drivers of offending, and contemporary responses to crime, including prevention, victim services, and rehabilitation. Students will also study court structures and decision points (trial and appellate roles, plea bargaining, sentencing, probation, and juvenile transfer) and explore forensic and correctional roles to prepare for applied practice in the next unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze major criminological theories (e.g., rational choice, social learning, social control, peacemaking, biological) to explain different types of offending such as hate crimes, sexual offenses, organized crime, and terrorism, and identify strengths and limitations of each theory
• Evaluate prevention, deterrence, and intervention strategies (including drug abuse prevention, victim services, rehabilitation, and anti-terrorism measures) for effectiveness and equity, and propose evidence-based responses for given case scenarios
• Apply knowledge of the justice system by explaining the functions and decision-making roles of trial judges, appellate judges, and federal courts, and by outlining appropriate procedural steps for plea agreements, probation placement, sentencing, and juvenile adjudication/transfer
• Demonstrate understanding of forensic and correctional practice by describing forensic specialties (e.g., forensic scientist, computer forensic specialist), identifying challenges in the prison system, and developing victim-centered investigative or support plans for forensic scenarios
