Empires, Beliefs, and Conflict

This unit examines how early empires, belief systems, and military technologies shaped societies across Eurasia and the Americas. Students investigate primary texts, archaeological evidence, and key events (e.g., 323 BCE, 476 CE) to explain political, cultural, and technological change and prepare to study medieval and modern world developments in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze causes and consequences of state formation and collapse by using specific examples (e.g., Assyrian expansion, Alexander’s successors, the fall of the Western Roman Empire) to explain political and social change.
• Evaluate the influence of military technologies and strategies (iron/steel weaponry, siegecraft, gunpowder) on power, territorial expansion, and cultural exchange by citing at least three historical case studies.
• Compare and interpret primary texts and belief systems (Confucian Analects, the Bible, Judaic writings, and Eastern philosophies) to explain their roles in shaping institutions, education, and governance.
• Demonstrate historical inquiry skills by analyzing archaeological and documentary evidence (skeletal analysis, record-keeping artifacts, early writing) to construct a chronological explanation of continuity and change from early record keeping through 476 CE.
