Establishing Animal Systems and Care

This unit guides hobby farmers through building safe, sustainable animal systems by covering personal protective equipment, basic infrastructure (power, water, land access, and barriers), pasture and erosion management, and introductory species care. Learners will also practice acquiring animals responsibly and implementing routine husbandry, preventative health, and emergency response measures. It builds on foundational concepts and prepares students for advanced production, breeding, and business management in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and select appropriate personal protective equipment, tools, and first-aid supplies for common hobby-farm tasks and species, justifying choices based on risk and task requirements.
• Apply principles of resource and infrastructure management by creating a basic plan for power, water, land access, natural barriers, and pasture/erosion control to support small-scale animal operations sustainably.
• Demonstrate the ability to assess and select suitable animal species and reputable sources by developing acquisition criteria, timing strategies, and seller-evaluation checklists tailored to farm goals.
• Evaluate and implement routine husbandry and health protocols—including hygiene, feeding, continuous clean water provision, vaccination scheduling, behavior monitoring, first-aid kit composition, and emergency response procedures—for maintaining animal welfare and biosecurity.
