This unit examines ethically charged issues at the beginning and end of life and the moral conduct of clinical research. Students explore abortion ethics, the medical and legal determination of death, end-of-life care and death with dignity, and the evolution and design of ethical clinical trials to prepare for responsible patient care and research literacy.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze ethical, legal, and cultural arguments related to abortion and reproductive decision-making, citing relevant North Carolina considerations and professional standards
- Evaluate medical and legal criteria for determining death and assess implications for organ donation, pronouncement procedures, and surrogate decision-making
- Apply principles of palliative care, advance directives, and patient-centered communication to develop end-of-life care plans that respect patient dignity and legal rights
- Design and critique clinical research proposals using core research ethics concepts (informed consent, risk–benefit analysis, IRB oversight) and identify safeguards to prevent historical abuses
