Foundations of AI for Nonprofits

This unit introduces foundational concepts, ethical considerations, and practical tools for applying AI in nonprofit settings. Students will learn critical skills and competencies, how to frame problem statements and funding approaches, and evaluate vendor solutions while preparing for ongoing experimentation and responsible implementation.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze ethical considerations and disclosure requirements for AI use in nonprofit contexts, including strategies for addressing language accessibility and equity
• Evaluate critical professional skills and competencies needed by nonprofit teams to plan, pilot, and sustain AI initiatives
• Apply a basic framework to assess funding options and technology vendors (e.g., AWS for Nonprofits, Benevity, AppealAI, Board.dev, BoardEffect) relative to nonprofit goals and constraints
• Demonstrate the ability to construct a clear background/problem statement and articulate a compelling ‘why’ to guide experimentation and future project planning
