Foundations of Forensic Investigation

This unit introduces core concepts and practices used by forensic investigators, including crime scene assessment, evidence classification, and the roles of forensic specialists. Students will gain foundational skills in identifying, preserving, and documenting a wide range of evidence (fingerprints, blood, trace, impressions, firearms, toxicants, fire indicators, and human remains) to prepare for more advanced laboratory analyses in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze crime scenes by applying systematic assessment, evidence recognition, documentation, and chain-of-custody procedures in simulated investigations
• Demonstrate correct identification, classification, collection, and preservation techniques for common types of forensic evidence including fingerprints, blood and bloodstain patterns, trace materials, impressions (shoe/tire), and firearms/arson indicators
• Apply basic principles of forensic pathology and toxicology to interpret cause and manner of death, estimate time of death, and recognize indicators of asphyxia or poisoning in case-based scenarios
• Evaluate the roles and responsibilities of forensic specialists (criminalists, forensic pathologists, forensic psychiatrists, trace analysts) and determine appropriate laboratory tests and expert referrals based on case evidence
