Foundations of Medical Terminology

This unit introduces the building blocks of medical terminology, including roots, combining forms, prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations, pronunciation, and spelling conventions. Students will learn anatomy‑based vocabulary across body systems and apply terminology to realistic documentation and communication tasks to prepare for more advanced clinical language and practicum units.

• Analyze the structure of medical terms by identifying roots, combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes and explaining how each component contributes to overall meaning
• Apply standard formation and pronunciation rules to construct, pronounce, and derive correct singular and plural forms of common medical terms
• Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy‑based terminology by matching terms to the appropriate organ systems, structures, functions, and common conditions
• Evaluate and accurately use common medical abbreviations and acronyms and correct commonly misspelled medical terms in simulated documentation and verbal communication
