Foundations of PC Hardware and Safety

This unit introduces core desktop and laptop hardware, peripherals, and safe handling procedures while covering basic power management, storage, and initial Windows setup. Learners will also explore introductory networking concepts, security fundamentals, and data protection practices to prepare for troubleshooting and OS configuration in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the functions and relationships of core PC and laptop components (motherboard, CPU, RAM, storage, GPU, power supply, ports) and differentiate common form factors and peripheral types.
• Assemble and disassemble a desktop PC and perform basic laptop setup, following ESD, battery, and workshop safety procedures while correctly installing RAM, storage devices, and peripheral connections.
• Demonstrate proper power management and startup/shutdown procedures, including safe handling of batteries, use of power adapters/cords, and thermal/ventilation precautions for portable and desktop systems.
• Apply introductory networking and security practices by explaining the role of the Internet, local network file access, firewalls, and the Windows Security Center, and performing basic data backup and mass storage maintenance.
