This unit introduces core principles and decision-making skills for planning sustainable landscapes in North Carolina. Students will learn to assess site conditions, choose appropriate elements and plants, weigh DIY versus professional options, and develop a preliminary sustainable plot with suitable watering strategies to prepare for hands-on implementation in later units.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze core principles of sustainable landscaping and identify at least five practices (e.g., native plant selection, soil health management, habitat enhancement, water conservation, and integrated pest management) appropriate for North Carolina settings
- Apply decision-making criteria to select landscape features and plant materials for a given site scenario, justifying selections based on climate, soil, maintenance needs, aesthetics, and ecosystem benefits
- Evaluate whether to perform common landscaping tasks as a DIY project or hire a professional by comparing costs, required skills, time investment, and long-term maintenance implications for at least three tasks
- Demonstrate the ability to produce a basic site inventory and preliminary sustainable landscape plot that documents existing conditions, incorporates design basics, and outlines a prioritized watering plan comparing at least two irrigation or watering options
