This unit introduces human-centered design practices and pragmatic techniques for integrating AI into user workflows. Students will learn rapid, low-fidelity prototyping, how to set realistic expectations for AI, and how to evaluate and prioritize use cases and prompts for safer, more effective AI-assisted experiences.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze AI capabilities, limitations, and common red flags to form realistic expectations for AI-assisted expert workflows
- Apply rapid low-fidelity prototyping methods (timeboxed exercises, pencil sketches, sticky-note flows) to produce at least two UX concepts for an AI-enabled task
- Evaluate and prioritize potential use cases by assessing task criticality and required interface real estate to determine suitability for automation
- Demonstrate improved prompt and question design by revising and testing prompts (e.g., role clarifications like “biologist”) to reduce ambiguity and produce more reliable outputs
