This unit advances students from foundational markup into dynamic client- and server-side scripting. Students learn JavaScript control structures, DOM traversal and event handling, client-side storage and accessibility/responsive techniques, plus basic PHP/MySQL integration and security practices to prepare for building and hardening dynamic web pages.
Learning Objectives
- Apply JavaScript syntax and programming constructs (reserved words, keywords, comparison and logical expressions, loops, and functions) to implement, test, and debug dynamic client-side behaviors.
- Demonstrate DOM traversal and manipulation along with event handling techniques — including retrieving event data, preventing default actions, and interacting with HTMLFormElement/HTMLInputElement — to create responsive user interfaces.
- Analyze and implement client-side persistence and user experience considerations by using Web Storage APIs, removing stored data appropriately, applying responsive image and mobile-first techniques, and applying accessibility best practices for text and media.
- Evaluate and apply basic server-side integration and security measures by writing PHP to generate pages, querying MySQL with separated credentials, securing file uploads, and escaping outgoing data to mitigate common vulnerabilities.
