Medical Terminology: Body Systems

This unit expands students’ foundational medical vocabulary by focusing on anatomical root words, prefixes, suffixes, pronunciation, and common pathological terms across major body systems. Students will practice applying word-building strategies and reliable reference tools to read, interpret, and communicate medical terms accurately, preparing them for clinical documentation and subsequent skill-building units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and break down multi-component medical terms from multiple body systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, urinary, endocrine, reproductive, integumentary, lymphatic, and musculoskeletal) to identify roots, prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms and state their meanings
• Apply standard pronunciation rules, pluralization exceptions, and common suffix/endings to pronounce and spell medical terms accurately in oral and written exercises
• Demonstrate the ability to use reputable online medical references (e.g., Medilexicon, WebMD) and class resources to verify definitions, pronunciations, and clinical relevance of terminology and pathological conditions
• Evaluate clinical vocabulary by synthesizing individual word parts to interpret basic pathological conditions and common diagnostic terms and explain their implications for patient care and interprofessional communication
