Policy, Justice, and Sustainable Solutions

This unit examines how policy, law, science, and technology intersect to address modern environmental challenges at local, national, and international scales. Students synthesize case studies on pollution, climate change, resource management, and environmental justice to design practical, equitable mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the roles and effectiveness of international and national environmental agreements (e.g., Montreal Protocol, UNFCCC, BRS, CMS, World Heritage Convention, Mediterranean Convention) in preventing and mitigating pollution, biodiversity loss, and transboundary resource conflicts.
• Evaluate environmental justice and human population influences by interpreting case studies (e.g., environmental racism, Gulf of Mexico dead zone, unregulated logging, traffic congestion) and proposing equitable policy or management responses.
• Apply principles of sustainable resource management and appropriate technologies (e.g., renewable energy, energy conservation, integrated pest management, sustainable agriculture and aquaculture, responsible forestry) to design interventions that reduce environmental impact.
• Demonstrate the ability to develop and justify pollution prevention and hazardous materials plans using the precautionary principle, hazardous waste handling protocols, groundwater/wastewater protections, and waste-reduction strategies (including marine debris and transboundary waste controls).
