Risk Assessment and Safety Management

This unit deepens practical skills in workplace risk assessment, hazard control, and safety management systems, covering specific risks (transport, manual handling, machinery, electricity, fire, chemicals, radiation) and human factors. Students will apply regulatory guidance, set KPIs, prepare emergency procedures, and draft a concise health and safety policy while practicing clear safety communication to prepare for advanced implementation in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze applicable health and safety regulations and official guidance (including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and HSE resources) to determine legal responsibilities for a given workplace scenario
• Apply structured risk assessment methods to identify and prioritize hazards—including transport, manual handling, machinery, electricity, fire, chemical and radiation risks—and recommend appropriate control measures for at least two case studies
• Evaluate recognised safety management systems, KPIs, and process safety practices to select and justify an appropriate system and targets for a defined organisational context
• Develop emergency procedures and a concise health and safety policy, and produce safety communication materials (e.g., guidance documents and a stakeholder briefing) that use correct terminology and clear, actionable instructions
