Safety Management and Hazard Control

This unit builds on foundational health and safety concepts to develop competency in organizational safety systems, hazard controls, inspections, and regulatory compliance. Students will practice applying management system elements, conducting audits and investigations, and selecting safeguards to reduce risk and support employee welfare in public health settings.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze workplace hazards and existing controls (including fire, asbestos, chemicals, machinery, and ergonomic risks) and prioritize risk-reduction measures using inspection and audit data
• Apply recognized safety management system elements and relevant regulatory requirements to develop or revise a site-specific statement of general policy and contracting/insurance provisions
• Demonstrate procedures for planning and conducting inspections, audits, and accident investigations, and synthesize findings into actionable corrective actions and prevention strategies
• Evaluate communication, training, and welfare interventions (including drugs/alcohol policies, workstation ergonomics, COSHH-related controls, and industry standards) to improve compliance and organizational safety culture
