Workplace Health and Safety Essentials

This unit introduces foundational concepts in workplace health and safety, including risk thinking, common occupational hazards, and the components of effective safety management systems. Students will learn to use assessment tools, understand regulatory and organizational responsibilities, and evaluate safety culture to prepare for advanced applied units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze workplace health and safety principles, regulatory frameworks, and the role of the Health and Safety Executive to determine responsibilities and legal implications
• Apply risk assessment techniques and the Office Risk Assessment Tool to identify, prioritize, and document hazards such as manual handling, machinery, electricity, fire, chemicals, noise, working at height, and workplace violence
• Demonstrate the design and implementation of safe systems of work and appropriate control measures (engineering, administrative, and PPE) for selected workplace hazards
• Evaluate organizational safety culture and monitoring strategies to recommend actionable improvements that enhance worker health, business continuity, and regulatory compliance
