Spatial Data Analysis and Management

This unit develops hands-on skills for managing, analyzing, and preparing spatial data using database systems, raster and vector techniques, and common GIS platforms. Students will apply surface and network analyses, automate workflows with scripting, and evaluate data sources, projections, and map content to produce accurate, shareable spatial products.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and manipulate tabular and spatial data within database management systems (including object-oriented and NoSQL approaches) to prepare datasets for GIS workflows
• Apply raster and vector analysis methods—such as surface modeling, watershed delineation, impedance/network analysis, advanced overlays, and map algebra—to solve spatial problems
• Demonstrate proficiency using desktop, web, and scripting tools (QGIS, ArcGIS Online/Living Atlas, and automation scripts) to import, geocode, map, and automate GIS tasks
• Evaluate and select appropriate data sources, map projections, statistical summaries, and visualization choices to ensure accurate, interpretable, and actionable spatial outputs
