This unit introduces the concepts of citizen development, Shadow IT, and the evolving roles of insiders and outsiders in organizational technology improvement. Students will explore maturity models, risk-tolerance decisions, and prepare initial project plans that target and scale improvement benefits to bridge business needs and IT governance.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze organizational case studies to identify Shadow IT practices, distinguish citizen developer roles from traditional IT roles, and map stakeholder relationships in written reports
- Evaluate maturity models and risk-tolerance forks to recommend appropriate risk mitigation and governance strategies for citizen-led automation initiatives
- Demonstrate preparatory project skills by creating a basic kickoff plan that includes objectives, stakeholders, target benefits, and a preliminary risk assessment for a citizen development pilot
- Apply communication and engagement strategies to propose how citizen development initiatives can be presented to IT and business leaders to gain support and align with organizational priorities
