This unit explores advanced Python tools, libraries, and workflows that extend core programming skills—debugging, testing, performance optimization, multimedia/GUI integration, data handling, networking, and version control. Students will apply package documentation and third-party modules, use developer tools, and employ best practices to build, test, optimize, and deploy robust Python applications.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze and debug Python programs using interactive tools (IPython), debuggers (pydbgr), and error-detection strategies to locate and resolve syntax and runtime issues
- Apply third-party libraries (e.g., PyAudio, PyQtGraph, Whoosh, Twisted, JPype) and data structures (deque, Counter) to implement multimedia, GUI, search, network, and interoperability features
- Demonstrate code-quality and collaboration practices by writing unit tests with PyUnit, organizing imports with isort, deleting/handling files safely, and managing source history with Mercurial
- Evaluate and optimize application behavior and data workflows—including sorting/searching techniques, Unicode and XML handling, profiling for speed, real-time/scientific analysis, and performance improvements
